I'm glad you like him! That character as I conceived him can go to some dark places, but no one wants to read that puerile mid-90s "super angsty broody edgy antihero" stuff, so I'm trying to give him a little bit of self-awareness and cynical gallows humor. I think it's in character but makes him a little more tolerable.
