Just as an idea which could help you fit the setting better if desired. I am [i]not[/i] criticising your character at all. you seemed concerned about it fitting in. 

I'm pretty sure the setting allowed for ranged sword moves. You could specialise in those if desired or take up the use of throwing weapons as your primary means of offence which were also seen in the anime (I'd recommend looking into chakrams, a circular flying blade that can go extreme distances).
