He doesn't particularly enjoy talking, at least not any more than he particularly enjoys anything else. He is aloof at the best of times, and unresponsive at the worst. Ever since his time ended in the military, cut short by injury, he has found less and less appreciation for the people and things he once held dear. Relationships he had once cared about -friends, family- began slipping away. His interest in many things faded, save those that made him feel whole again. He allowed himself to fall into the world of SAO, hoping that he could at least hide from his past, a coward. Feeling all but totally defeated, Alek allowed himself to slip into darkness. Just below a surface of darkness, however, an inner light still shines with compassion, purpose, and most of all, hope. He decided to try something new in the hopes that it would offer meaningful human interaction in a time when significant interaction seemed hard to come by. He hoped that, at the very least, he could expand his social circle to more than just reluctant relatives that struggled to understand sign. The ability to speak again would also come as a relief to the constant nagging guilt. Life Prior to Playing SwordArt: Alek was just one soldier in a long line of military men. Both his father and grandfather served in the RAF, with countless others proceeding them. It seemed only natural that Alek, and his twin brother, would follow suit. After a move to the United States when they was very young, the young Petrov brothers' military career was set in motion. Throughout their early childhood years, the Petrov brothers were inseparable, to say the least. Both enjoyed the same sports, the same hobbies, and the same lifestyle. Although competition between the two was fierce and unending, beneath their competitive natures lie the deepest love and respect for each other. In high school, Alek's only competition for top merits were from his brother Leo. For all four years, both Alek and Leo led the JROTC class with the two highest GPAs, as well as the entire school. Each year, both brothers relentlessly studied to top the other. After graduation, both Alek and Leo decided to pursue the same secondary education. Four years later, both had a UG in engineering from Westpoint, with sights set on a career in the EOD. As with everything that came before it, EOD training proved easy for both the Petrovs. Both were assigned to the 52nd, a deploying unit for EOD specialists. Though now direct competition, Alek and Leo still had nothing but a deep respect for each other, something that had rarely diminished since the day they were born. That mutual unspoken love would last beyond death. The 52nd, though frequently deployed, saw a low amount of actual combat, with more deaths occurring from careless mistakes than anything else. In their first real mission, Alek and Leo were assigned a simple bomb diffusion. The last thing Alek remembered was Leo's voice followed by a bang. Alek survived with only scarring, damage to his vocal cord nerve and lungs, and an honorable discharge. Leo wasn't so lucky. Life Since Playing SwordArt: Alek used SAO as many did: an out to a tragic event. He was accepted into beta testing as an experimental subject to VR treatment of PTSD. Though not usually one for video games, Alek found that he was immediately immersed in a world apart from his own, where he could be distracted as well as hear his own voice outside of his head. Alek has gone on since then spending as much time in the game as possible, afraid to live in the real world.
