Bruce Howlett was born the second son of 19th century Canadian landowners Thomas and Martha Howlett in Saskatchewan. The Howletts were well established across North America, owning a large oil company, HowlettCorp, in New Gotham. Bruce was often overlooked by his parents due to his short stature and sickly frame, and their constant trips to New Gotham, his elder brother Thomas Junior getting favored by his parents.
Eventually, the Howletts realized that young Bruce was horribly unprepared for life as a result of being raised more by his busy brother, so, in order to prepare him for his inheritance, the Howletts decided to take him on a trip to their corporate headquarters in New Gotham. Spending time coddling Bruce, who spent most of his time brooding and sleeping, the Howletts decided to attempt to cheer the boy up by taking him to see the recently released "The Mask of Zorro". Bruce enjoyed the movie and was pleased for the first time in the trip, however it turned into tragedy when a former employee of the Howletts by the name of Joe Logan cornered them in an alleyway and shot Thomas and Martha dead. Overcome by grief and fear, Bruce's powers manifested for the first time, and he murdered the man in cold blood.
In order to protect his brother, Thomas bought a spot on a ship to Asia, sending Bruce away for his own protection. Wandering the east, Bruce began training under a variety of masters, returning and, with Thomas' patronage, becoming the hero Dark Claw.
