Tunneling is the Elicitor's specialty and secret weapon. The fact it does it fast is what makes it so powerful. And yeah, it's probs leaving a huge ass hole behind, though I'd also imagine it's moving the dirt in it's way behind it to pelt anyone who gives chase. Only reason it hasn't done so already is cuz it's energy consuming and faster just going overland. Probs.
