As a young child, Esther rarely got out, almost always inside of her room with medicine by her side. She was a sickly child with a weak heart. She would get a high fever weekly and even when she got better, her mother would keep her in her room since she was so paranoid. Her father was an inexpressive man that often came off as cold even though he wasn't all that. Her father had wanted a son for many years. He did not know that the child was a daughter until the day that she was born.

However, her father still did not want to accept it. She was raised as a "he" and was never 

Her mother almost always looked nervous, her eyes darting across the room whenever someone walks in. She always had the feeling that someone was after them, pressuring her daughter to not go outside of the castle after 5 pm.
