Maddie witnessed the fire elemental's demise, its humanoid form shattering into what seemed to be hundreds of pieces. However, the end of its existence came too soon, and it was too easy of a job to realistically expect that to be the Headmaster's plan. No matter how bad Maddie wanted to believe that she had passed the test, in the back of her mind she expected there to be more. Her smile then faded when she saw the flame fragments coming back to life, scattered on the ground where they laid motionless moments before shooting up about 10 feet into the air. In a moment of desperation, Maddie made an attempt to stop the attack, or at least slow it down. But she was outnumbered by an exaggerated amount, and the reality hit her when she was struck multiple times in the back, arms, legs, torso, and in the back of her head. Switching to the defensive at that point, Maddie kept one arm up to shield her face while she used the other one to wave away the surrounding flames with one swift motion. This was a rather hard task as she hadn't yet mastered how to control an external source of fire belonging to someone else, much less when the source is an elemental themselves, but she managed to come through. Even though the burn marks were scattered throughout her body, Maddie didn't let the pain stop her. She took a few deep breaths and rounded up as much of her energy as possible before creating a fiery whirlwind that would swallow up the small flames and trap them inside with no chance of escape.
