You see, when her father stabbed her with the shard, he was attempting bring back the devil through sacrifice. He believed that the shard he had was the heard of Satan himself, when it was only a piece of it. The nature of the Shard of Corruption is that it must be stabbed into the heart of a pure, innocent victim in order to be activated. Once that has happened, it fuses with the heart and becomes one with the person, so that the person cannot live without it. It literally becomes their heart.
