Emma
Excitement welled through Emma as she headed into the cluster of eggs. Somehow, she knew which direction to take. Something, someone, seemed to be whispering to her. The dazzling beauty of the eggs made her breath catch as she turned her head left and right, pulling her phone from her bag and taking photos. Finally, she stopped in front of a brown egg mottled with shimmering green patches. Reaching out, she skimmed her fingers across its shell. It mostly had a very slight rough texture, like bark, yet the green speckles were as smooth as the outer layer of a sapling. She gasped in surprise as it cracked with a sound of snapping wood. Something moved inside, rustling like leaves. As pieces of the shell came away, the smell of grass and flowers drifted into the air. With a squeak, a head poked out. The closest resemblance was to a lizard, but not even that was a truly apt comparison. The dragon blinked, staring at her with emerald-coloured eyes, and clambered from its shell. Branch-like protrusions covered the creature's body, tangled with leaves, vines and the buds of flowers. Several nursemaids approached with a towel, gently cleaning the newborn dragon, revealing every shade of green from leaf to moss. After staring in awe for a few seconds, Emma crouched down and stroked the dragon's head. Something surged to life inside her, something ancient and otherworldly. Images of overgrown wilderness, the scurrying and flitting of woodland creatures, magnificent blooms opening to the sunlight, filled her mind. With the images came a name. "Maia..." Emma whispered. "Your name is Maia." Looking up at Emma like a newborn baby towards its mother, Maia gave a happy chirp. Emma, came the dragon's soft response in her head.
