@Spriggs27 it's ok. I just wanted to make sure that I hadn't missed something. She'll probably get in trouble for not attending a mandatory class.

@Lucius Cypher I have several question.
1. Where did she get her powers? You say the make then you say any similar mask will do. That makes no sense.
2. Why is she called the black beast? The description sounds more like the black blob.
3. How is the beast connected to the mask if any mask will do?
4. The beast sort of sounds like a spin off of Slenderman. I am not sure how that will fit.
5. Why did the beast choose Arache?
6. You said the beast's weakness was the mask how can that be when any mask do?
7. What is the hunger about?

@KatherinWinter

I should begin by saying that none of Arachne's powers are based off any particular hero, at least none that I know of. I would dare say that everything about her is original, though more than likely I've inadvertently cribbed the style of other heroes that I just don't know about. So without further ado, in the order given:

1. Essentially, Arachne gained her powers from a sort of quasi-cosmic force that is similar to the Greek Gods. In this instance, her powers were a "curse" from this force, since she challenged them by not leaving the forest when they were near (It's where the storm came from). The power doesn't quite come from the masks, so much as the masks gives the curse inside of her a sort of focus. It has to be a white, round mask with three black dots because it's actually suppose to be a skull, or at least the upper portion. A simple white mask with three dots is just easier for Arachne to get her hands on, and it's good enough for the Black Beast to awaken.

2. While Black Blob is certainly accurate, Black Beast was chosen because it's more fearsome. Calling it "The Black Blob" makes it sound like some sort of cheesy sci-fi monster you'd expect to beat with an Aesop about recycling. Black Beast at least makes it sound like the sort of thing you'd expect to be going around eating livestock and occasionally people.

3. As I said above, the mask is symbolic for a skull, because the Black Beast wants a face. It has a rather... Peculiar idea of what a face is, since as far as the Black Beast knows, the flesh and skin that you'd call a face is just a mask to a skull, which the Black Beast feels drawn towards.

4. I never really intended for the similarities, and as I said, I'm not basing Arachne off any particular superhero or villain. I suppose you could say she has similar origins to the Blue Beetle Scarab, though again Arachne is more pseudo magic than alien science.

5. The beast didn't choose Arachne, it's a curse. The beast is actually a sort of manifestation of Arachne's own "hunger", in this instance, a hunger to be more than human. Arachne wanted to be special It is of course a double-edge sword: now she is special, because she has a ravenous monster inside of her that hungers for what she wants, as well as developing it's own personality to give itself desires of it's own.

6. Technically speaking the mask is a weakness because when you destroy the mask, the Black Beast goes back inside of Arachne and she gets forced out. And Arachne isn't exactly Batman level of tough. I guess you could say that Arachne is the Black Beast's weakness, since killing Arachne would effectively kill the Black Beast too. And yes, Arachne can just use any mask to summon the Black Beast, but if you destroy the mask after it's summoned the Black Beast goes away. Additionally, the Black Beast can't make the mask any tougher than what it's already made of. So yeah, while Arachne could just make a paper mask to summon the Black Beast whenever she needs too, that also means the mask is about as tough as paper, so anything from being hosed down or a hot summer's day could damage the mask and banish the Black Beast.

7. Right, so as I was saying the hunger that the Black Beast craves for represents Arachne's own desires. See, Arachne is a chill person, but she lacks the drive to achieve her dreams or goals. She just kinda lays back and let's things happen, picking up whatever is good whenever it comes pass. She wants to do more, achieve greatness, but simply lacks the motivation. The Hunger is suppose to change that. Right now the Black Beast is still young, juvenile, and doesn't quite know what it's doing. It wants to eat meat, and Arachne has to feed it meat to satisfy it. The reason it wants meat right now because deep inside Arachne wants to become human again, and the Black Beast (Who remember is still pretty young and stupid) thinks that humans are meat.

As Arachne refines her powers the Black Beast will also gravitate towards this hidden desire in Arachne. Eventually just eating meat won't be enough and the Black Beast would want to eat the flesh of humans, because it thinks that by eating humans it will be human, which is what Arachne wants. When that time comes, Arachne needs to make a decision: Either she gives into her hunger and becomes a monster who desires to be human, and thus eats human, or accept this curse she's been given and that she'll never be a normal human again. The latter will allow her to no longer need to feed off humans and have a better control over the Black Beast since Arachne is now willing to be the Black Beast, instead of trying to be something different.

Now mind you, Arachne isn't aware of the Beast's true nature or even where it came from. After all, she's at the academy to figure this out. As far as she knows the Black Beast is just some sort of monster inside of her that she can summon when she wears round white masks with three black holes on it, and if she doesn't feed it regularly it'll take over her body. Part of her character development is not just learning more about the Black Beast and controlling it, but for Arachne to have more control over her own life instead of just lazying about and letting life do whatever it wants with her.

1. So she got the beast as a curse because she was on the forest were they were? I suppose that could work.
2. I agree that the black blob isn't as cool as the black beast but the creature is still a blob.
3. If the mask is symbolic then the beast isn't contextend to the mask. Therefore having that be a weakness makes no sense.
4. That's good that you didn't intend the similarity.
5. I am not sure I understand how the beast hungry connects to Arachne but I suppose that could develop in time.
6. If destroying the mask destroys or atleast forces the beast back inside then the beast should be connected to the mask. Otherwise it makes no sense to have the mask affect the beast.

@KatherinWinter

The mask has always been connected to the Black Beast. I don't know why you keep thinking it has nothing to do with it.

Like I said, the Beast is looking for a face. And to the beast, a face is a skull. So whenever Arachne wears a mask that looks like a skull (In this instance, a simple white mask with three holes, two being the eyes and one being the nose, is good enough), the Black Beast is drawn to it and takes it as it's face. The mask is symbolic to a skull, which is what the Black Beast wants. Thus, destroy what it wants drives the Black Beast back inside of Arachne.

Not only that but because Arachne still lacks control over the beast, even if the Black Beast is summoned for some other reason like that it's hungry, destroying the mask is good enough to drive the beast back into Arachne. Right now because Arachne doesn't have a good control over the Black Beast, she needs masks in order to summon it on her own. Later on once she gets stronger she can summon the Black Beast without masks, but that'll only happen after she accepts that the Black Beast is a part of her.

I based the Black Beast's hunger off the idea of Gluttony from the seven deadly sins. Most people think that gluttony just means eating a lot, but it goes deeper then that. It's the desire to have more than you really need, taking more than you deserve, and generally wanting something you shouldn't have. In this instance, Arachne bit off more than she could chew by staying in that forest despite all her friends leaving her. She challenged the cosmic forces because she wanted to do something interesting, despite how out-of-depth she really was. She wanted to show off and now she's paying the price for it. Now I know that also sounds like Greed, and those two are closely similar. But to me, Greed is more about not sharing what you have despite how much of it you do have. Gluttony takes more than it should, but Greed would never give what it can spare.

And yes, I will still continue to call it the Black Beast despite the fact it's a blob. It can turn into animals if it so desires, but being a blob is easier form for it to maintain since being a blob is it's natural form. Just like how shapeshifters tend to have a default form instead of staying a new form forever and ever.

I'm sorry if I am coming off as difficult. I'm just trying to understand. You say that the mask is connected but any white mask with three spots will work. That confuses me. If the beast is connected to the mask then it should be a specific mask not just anything that fits the beast idea of a skull. I understand that Arachne's need for the mask and cintroll could change in time. Greed and Gluttony and similar but they're not the same you will need to be careful about that. I figured that the blob could change shapes and that the shapeless blot was more it's natural form.

Well, it doesn't have an original mask. Originally, it actually used Arachne's own skull as it's focus, but fortunately the heroes who fought against the Black Beast managed to banish it back inside Arachne without killing her (Or crushing her skull). Later once Arachne get's better at controlling the Black Beast she can use her own skull again.

Additionally, the Black Beast is NOT under Arachne's command. Even if she calls for it and it's awaken, it won't come out unless it wants to. And it'll only come out when it can find a face, i.e. a skull-like mask. So if she ever wants to use the Black Beast for whatever reason, she needs a mask.

I honestly love this idea. I've read every iteration of this RP and this seems to be one of the few original ideas that hasn't been overpowered.

@KatherinWinter
Now I might be wrong in my interpretation of this, but the connection of the mask to the beast seems like a watered down version of my character's totem, so to speak. The Djinn aren't physical beings, they're spiritual creatures that use a totem to focus their energies into a corporeal form. They can change what item is the totem at will, but if you destroy the item that is acting as the totem, their energies very painfully disperse. That's when the ritual becomes necessary to bring a Djinn back.

With the beast however, if the current mask is destroyed, it retreats back in Arachne until another mask matching its idea of a face is found.

Edit: This isn't me trying to undermine the GM's authority or anything, I was just impressed by the concept and had to give praise where I think it's due

@Lucius Cypherwell. I'm okay with it. But like with everyone else, if I see something that needs to be addressed, I'll do so.

Still, I'll let Kathrine decide

as for mimic not playing fair and not treating it as if it as the real world, the only thing he wouldn't have had was the air filter. He mimics abilities. Meh. Anyway. @hagroden would you like to do this in a PM?

@Vulture585 maybe but while your djinn can change the appearance of her totem the totem itself stays the same.

No, the totem doesn't just change form. If Toto sees an object that he likes the look of, it becomes his new totem and the connection to the last one is severed. It's a process that takes a few hours and he's weak and nearly powerless while he's transitioning, but the totem itself isn't simply changing appearance. It's something new all together.

@Vulture585 I don't think it's the same for the mask. Atleast I didn't get that impression. It sounds like she just needs to grab a mask that is white with three black spots

I think you're right. I still feel like the fact that they don't seem to be giving the mask some sort of supernatural durability is really cool. I'm assuming the materials necessary to make a really tough mask aren't just lying around. That means that yes, in a ounch Arachne could just pick up a new mask but then she runs the risk of it being destroyed even more easily until she makes a new, appropriately durable one.
