She is trying to write a thesis on how the Marauders continue to be successful when so many others don't, and is trying to see if the psychological makeup of the non-military crewmembers somehow makes them more pliable when facing the unknown.

I'm considering that maybe she didn't have clearance from the military and just lied about it because she's so damn curious. Ironically that would be a criminal act, because it'd make her a stowaway...
