Actually, I've changed my mind.  If you think that it's plausible that your character might have been just wandering the wilderness while this mission was taking place, or that he's been staying quietly in a Belka in this whole time, you're totally free to have your guy respond to the obvious danger looming in nearby to quickly join the battle and lay in along with everyone else.  By standing up and lending a hand, he would automatically earn the regard of Frenzy Plant.
