i wouldnt say theyre necessary... but as with all events i supply you with, youll be rewarded. and you can just battle the gym leader as you would any other trainer :p dont worry if someone else is battling them at the same time as you. if we did that, the rp would halt to a snails pace waiting for everyone to battle the same gym leader one by one lol.
