There are alternate choices if you want Pokemon but can't afford the $40/50 base price.
Fangames, romhacks, and there's a few [i]really good[/i] knockoffs on the mobile, Gamejolt, and Itch Io.  Granted finding good ones of any of those is hard but possible.
