A bit of both. You [i]should[/i] have a backstory already made up, and the GM's should know in case there are things there that wouldn't fly (Cannibalism and the like), but otherwise you don't need to add it so that people won't have meta knowledge of your character. Because logically, no one knows who your character is until they get to know you.
