It's not that he doesn't care for him, but the way he thought he showed it was through providing for his son and giving him the best of everything he could want. . . except his time. Now it's like the professor Dad from Astro-Boy, where he takes in a creation to act as a surrogate, only to realize the surrogate can't replace what he's lost, and instead of accepting it, he pushes them away or gives them empty praise that amounts to nothing more than a "good job Reginald". So yeah, shitty dad.
