@6slyboy6 Having fun is all well and good, but considering everyone's definition of fun is different and everyone has different tastes, it's good to remain mindful and respectful of others when it comes to RP :D That said, I think you did a pretty good job of managing balance with power by using the DnD set of rules, and using traditionalised runes for more powerful spells would help keep challenge about your character as well as making him not entirely useless. Since you're using an apparently otherworldly magic, that means you couldn't just find some special runes in a merchant's store and buy them out - they'd need to be hand-crafted by your character, yes? Something which would take considerable time and energy just to make a dozen or so ^-^ Not to mention if you take on board Liferusher's idea, it not only requires time, but also specific items which could be incredibly rare in Lugnica. It helps add good insight into future conflicts, making sure your character needs to always be prepared for a powerful engagement, which could lead to some interesting developments (i.e he rushes in to save a civilian or friend despite not being fully prepared).
Personally, and I know this is an invalid opinion because I don't have any authority, but personally I think the idea has some merit :P Of course it'll need to be fleshed out to the GM and co-GMs standards, but it seems to me like it could work, even if he can cast basically all types of magic. Maybe what he casts is dependent on his surroundings? Like a magic version of Castform? :D
I think the last part is unecessary; the idea of requiring special materials for each 'runic' element is enough for me.
