Okay, so, I'm frankly kinda confused. I'm interested in a fantasy RP at the moment since I want to practice writing with magic, but I'm not 100% in the know about Fairy Tale and how everything works, so I'm going to throw out a few questions and the rough idea I have for a character to see how things would work.

1: The Fairy Tale wiki barely mentions anything about mage ranks or what kind of power they would have aside from "A lot." Could someone please clarify what exactly the standards are for this thread?

2: Would this work?

The character I'm planning would be a "leader" type character. If you've played Dungeons and Dragons, think of the Warlord. Here's her image.

The main thing I'd be thinking would be something along the lines of "shouts of power" or something akin to that. Like in the original Dawn of War where, if you upgrade a squad with a sergeant and use his "Rally Squad" ability, he can shout several things like "You will stand your ground!" and "Rally Squad!" among other things. See here. and here for examples.

I don't really know if this kind of magic would work in the Fairy Tale world. I was going to have the "shouts of power" be caster magic, though disguised as holder magic, specifically the gemstone in the pommel of her sword. The other thing would be a sort of "Repair" magic, which would keep her equipment in good shape and allow her to heal faster.

Would that work? The Wiki and watching a few episodes doesn't really bring a lot of clarity to what you can and cannot do.

I’m not a member of the RP, yet, but I believe I can help you.

Rank is a relative term, really. If you haven’t seen much of the anime its hard to describe. For example, Gajeel in Phantom Lord is the equivalent of their S rank, but in Fairy Tail, he would be considered A rank.

But generally

C = Barely competent, one trick pony. Think small fireballs and low MP

B = Most mages. Your run of the mill mage would be found here. Actual power varies widely. Think large fireballs and medium MP

A = Very strong, magic power easily equal to a small army (20+ Men) Think Powerful Fire and High MP

S is weird, power is a strong factor, but mostly it has to do with trust and personal ability. Judgment, skill, trustworthyness ect. Only given to a few mages.

Magic, caster or holder, tends to have a theme, and everything they can do stems from that theme. So, design your magic accordingly. Fire Dragon Slayer, Ice Make, Requip ect. In the Fairy Tail universe, buffing and healing magics are extremely rare. (And not slayer “rare”, I’m talking we know one canon character with similar abilities. And her healing and buffing abilities are very limited.) But its up to the GM’s discretion on that.

I may not be the GM, BUT allow me to assist you with my own thoughts and answers:

1: The Fairy Tale wiki barely mentions anything about mage ranks or what kind of power they would have aside from "A lot." Could someone please clarify what exactly the standards are for this thread?

Ok.

1). It's Fairy TAIL not Tale (Sorry I had to do that)

2). There's a ranking system among mages that coincides with what powers they possess. Depending on the power and at the skill they use them, they can be placed in the following ranks below, starting with the highest:

S-Rank: A true professional. Beyond simply being competent, they bring something to table that the rest of the group don't have. Something that makes them a cut above the rest. That is the minimum requirement in order to merely survive against the threats they are expected to face.

(Note this magic amongst anything over it is forbidden from this RP currently)

A-Rank: Mages who have proved their talent against the norm. Struggles in combat against higher ranks, but can pull out victorious. Examples include: Lucy Heartphilia (Celestial Spirit Magic), Freed Justine (Letter Magic & Eye Magic), Juvia Lockser (Water Make), Elfman Strauss (Take Over: Beast Form), Natsu Dragneel (Fire Dragon Slayer), Gray Fullbuster ("Expert" Ice Make currently in the manga), Erza Scarlet (Spatial Magic (Requip: The Knight), Sword Magic, Telekinesis), Mirajane Strauss (Take Over: Satan Soul & its respective forms), Wendy Marvell (Sky Dragon Slayer Magic), Gajeel Redfox (Iron Dragon Slayer), etc. etc.

B-Rank: Mages of Slightly Above Average talent who can put up a fight against A-Classes while going all out. Examples include: Evergreen (Fairy Magic), Cana Alberona (Card Magic), etc.

C-Rank: Mages who can't compete with A-Class and have trouble against B-Classes. Considered weak in physical power by the higher-ups of the Wizardry world. Examples include: Jet (High Speed), Happy (Flight, "Fire Magic"), Lisanna Strauss (Take Over (Animal Soul - "Note that these transformations are weaker than Elfman's Beast Soul), etc.

You can find a full list of ranks and which characters fit in which here to judge upon what you want to do here.

2: Would this work?

Now I haven't played Warhammer admittedly, but considering how familiar I am with said genre, that sounds more like giving orders than well just magic stuff. You could maybe have the character manipulate some army of (lets say Skeletal) soldiers of some kind and your commands may give them buffs regarding the situation. Idk about being solo regarding other characters though... although you may want to look at oriental solid script and sound magic for other ideas. These all come across words and letters being put into a magic of sort.

"Repair" Magic can be a thing, according to this one little fanon article here, although you should talk to the GM about this first.

The Wiki and watching a few episodes doesn't really bring a lot of clarity to what you can and cannot do.

You're going to need to watch waaaaay more episodes to get the grasp of what magic abilities can be used - or just use both the canon and fanon wikis for reference (but be aware of spoilers if you're that interested in the story).

Either way, I hope I happened to be of useful help to you :)

@Lmpkio

I am ninja incarnate

Pff fanon is barely reference-able.

Wendy is definitely A rank no question

Nastu is A+ he still lacks. Although he might have taken a level after the timeskip. But thats not relevant here

Grey, solid A, though recently he might have moved up to A+ for spoiler reasons. Also unknown after the timeskip

Gajeel, A again. But times— look you get the idea

Cana is...oh shit spoilers

Not B thats for sure

Plus you have S rank twice

To be fair, I did check the wiki regarding this and perhaps this is more of like potential more then... well, in actuality.

But yes, I think you're more accurate here so.

(Shhh I deleted that extra mistake lol. You didn't see anything...)

@Lmpkio

Thank you for the answers thus far, I'll provide a bit more clarity on what I meant.

I can understand that the confusion around the Commissar video sounding like he's giving orders, he mostly does, but I'm focusing on the other aspects of what he's saying. "This is our last stand! No doubt! No fear!" etc. Though perhaps she could be a sort of summoner that brings spiritual troops as needed? That'd probably be forbidden from what I understand.

However, I've noticed that this seems to be a bit tricky to write and I can't quite wrap my head around how to do it. Perhaps I'll just make her a really good swordsman? I don't want to explicitly copy Erza or have such a comparison made. The basic idea I had in mind was that she'd be able to rouse people back to their feet with a shout while leading the charge into battle.

I'll use one of the Warlords abilities as an example:

Fearless Rescue: Once per day, when an ally falls to 0 hit points you can move to attack the enemy that downed them. That ally can spend a healing surge. They gain 1d6 additional HP for every attack of opportunity you provoke along the way.

It's a bit more complicated than that. (You can read it here.) but you get the general idea.

Another one is: Renew the Troops: Each ally who can see you regains hit points equal to his or her healing surge value + your Charisma modifier. (See here.)

So I guess the basic idea is that she can bring people back from the brink by shouting at them and when she smacks people with her sword everyone regains some health.

I swear I respond responded to some of this yesterday, but apparently not.

@Lord Sawsaw2@Savo Actually, if it would be okay, I wouldn't mind taking out Kyuuten and making a Golem char that I've been sitting on, letting Savo have the spot. Just feeling like a change in pace in the types of characters I play. Again, if that's okay with you. Just a suggestion. I've actually got quite a bit to flesh out on that characters.

That's fine, just make sure to start work on him quickly so you don't get left behind.

*snipped CS*

@Lord Sawsaw2 As promised, here's the last character for Golem's Hand. Still lacking some editions, since I kinda want to make the writing of the Bio in particular smoother and still got to add some things to his Darkness Magic (specifically Custom spells and customized descriptions for every Canon spell) but since he isn't using it until later in the RP I felt that it would be ok to leave it like this as of now.

Illusion magic is another extemely difficult to balance magic. At present, Wonderland automatically wins you a fight against most characters, and will need revision. I'll do some suggestions and points about both your magics this evening after work.

@Crimson Raven, @Valor I wasn't planning on adding any more characters, but it is definitely my fault for leaving the status at Apply, so if you're both invested, I guess I can handle two more. I'll get around to answering questions and looking at your sheets in a few hours.

@Savo This character looks hilarious, I love the magic and look forwards to seeing what level of lecher you make him~

As for the spells you've listed, they're all fine on the same conditions as the rest of the people who have made trap and entanglement spells: they're fine as long as you give the target a post to react (unless they're dumb enough to stand on a pre-set trap; I'll be handling how traps work in a later post).

For Intertwined Mimic, the casting is fine as long as you specify that either a) the mimic uses the magical thread of its body to cast, which lowers its durabilty/shortens its duration or b) any spells cast by the mimic drain the original's magic reserves automatically. Additionally, the more damage that the copy has sustained, the less area that it will be able to cover with thread when it explodes.

Silk and Serenity is fine if you include a maximum amount that he can absorb (like he gets full as if he's been eating or something), and you further clarify what kind of 'fiber' he can absorb, since the word fiber relates to a huge swathe of things that would otherwise have nothing to do with his magic.

As for power level, this is fine for a B-class mage, feel free to add more advanced techniques as he advances as a character.

@Valor It's not that you're not wanted, and I apologise if I came across that way! I am (as you can see by my post count) new to GM'ing on this site, and wasn't planning on starting a campaign that would be too much for me to handle. But I can handle a couple of extra characters, so if you are interested in staying, you are welcome to do so.

Ouch what a note to start on...

I’m grateful that you are willing to make an exception for us.

I’m thinking to retool a character from a different RP for this one, but first, a quick question.

In this AU, does/did Fairy Tail exist?

I've heard this takes place 15 - 20 years BEFORE Fairy Tail (although Im not sure if they mean the guild or the events; I would want for the GM to elaborate a bit more on this)

That wasn't the implication I got. I've been staring at the thread for a day or two by now, and even started a bio, but I couldn't wrap my head around a lot, gave up for a bit, watched a few episodes of FT, and decided to try again and ask questions after that didn't clear up a lot.

Anyway. I'll wait for your opinion on the various bits of magic I've detailed.

There's a lot regarding S ranks in FT wiki. There are a lot of S ranks too, a surprising amount.

Obviously not everyone they encounter is an official mage so there are loads more "S rank level" mages too. Natsu jumps to S and beyond when friendship kicks in at the end of every arc too with something like Lightning Fire Dragon.

Well

I suppose you need to draw the difference between S class power and S class rank

A wizard can have one without the other. S power but not rank (Manga Natsu) or S class Rank but not power, like

Lmpkio is correct, the guild Fairy Tail does exist, but it isn't nearby on the continent, and it's about 15 years before the beginning of the events of the series. Remaking a previously created character is fine though, and you're welcome to have them tied to FT, just confirm it with me first obviously if it's something hugely relevant.

That's a significant level of dedication for getting your head into the series, I commend you on your effort! As mentioned, however, you need to be watching a fair bit further in to get a full understanding on your questions. Fortunately, the other two have generally been very helpful with their answers. Consider the power levels as the following level:

C-class can take on one or two average humans (who have no powers)
B-class can take 5-10
A-class can take 20-100 (there's a wide gap of power for A-Class mages)
S-class can either take 100+ or does something else incredibly special or unique

As for your idea, I think it can be worked with! You're more than welcome to make someone similar to The Titania, with ex-equip as the primary fighting ability. Your idea about shouts is definitely workable, and I'm happy to help you figure out a way to make it work.

Feel free to ask if you have any further queries, concerns, or questions!

We'll keep it simple. Ranks are ranks as part of the system. However A and S entail advanced prowess, for A ranks it doesn't necessarily mean that's one of their strong points, but S ranks are required to have that incredible prowess and more. B ranks are your average experienced mage, and below that are either newbies or just simply weaker mages. Below B take more menial jobs that have little bearing on their ability to fight.
