[/quote] Flexible-but-not-flexible, yes. Allow your players some freedom to keep them entertained but nudge them back on track (although make it not so obvious). After all, it is still your RP and you're controlling the reins. Clear endings are great, and you should be flexible because player choices can drastically alter how you view the RP to end, but it is best not to plan so far ahead before even starting the RP. As you said yourself, RPs can die, no matter how small or big. I should also add that GMing is a completely subjective matter. What might work for me might not work for you, but it is still good to ask for advice.
