The real problem would be the "Southern Attitude", since African-Americans were far more readily accepted in the northern states than in the Deep South. This was part of the reason for the mass exodus of coloured free men moving north during this period of history. As far as African-American musical acts, a lot of them were around from 1890 onwards, with celebrities like Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and James P. Johnson actively performing and touring around the US as early as 1904, with a large increase of acts during the 1910s.
