Naveroth Direwolves  are corrupted mutant wolves warped by black magic, they dont behave like other natural creatures and are always hostile to everything living, like an advanced form of rabies. Maybe Rhiannon didn't expect an attack and was caught off guard as she isn't from Naveroth originally.
