Honestly, it may have been the most beautiful day of the year. The sun was high in the sky, bathing the city of Angel Grove in a pleasant warmth of seventy five degrees F, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It was warm, it was nice out… It was the perfect day to be outside! That is, if you weren’t dressed in a bright orange reflective vest, with giant, bold black lettering on the back that proudly declared you a member of the Cherub County Juvenile Delinquent System. Of the gathered, six though, only five of them wore Cherub County JDS vests — the sixth wore one that claimed she was a volunteer. Why someone would volunteer for this kind of punishment was anyone’s guess, but there she was.

It seemed to James that he could have been stuck with a worse fate. All things considered? His punishment could have far more severe, but rather than being locked up in a cell he was out here. For four hours, every Saturday for the next month and a half, he and this group of people would be picking up the shit people were too lazy to throw away in the provided trash cans. Building character, the judge had told him and Christian.

What the fuck kind of BS was that? Building character? What did that even mean?

James felt like he had a pretty good character. In fact, if someone were to ask him, he’d say that he got the shaft in this scenario. Really, he did! What he’d done was easy to defend. He, along with Christian, had gotten in a fight with some of the students from another school over something they said about James’s mother during a football game — the last one of the year, actually! There were worse fates than something as simple as a bout of community service, for that.

“Can I have your attention?”

James was snapped out of his trance by the voice of the grey haired man who was standing in front of all of them.

“Welcome to community service. You’re all here for different reasons, but your goal is the same nonetheless: building character.”

Why did they keep saying that?

“We’ll be starting here, at Angel Grove Park, and we’ll go from there. Please, just pick up the trash. I’ll be reviewing your work every day to my superiors — both as individuals, and as a team. I’m not a slave driver, so you can interact with each other if you want to, you all look like you’re the same age...ish. Trust me, I’ve done this a hundred times, and the whole thing will be a lot easier if you just buckle down and do it.”

He paused for a moment, and James tightened his grip on his garbage poker and bag, preparing for the mission ahead, before the man spoke again.

“Oh, go ahead and introduce yourselves. Might as well…”

Not even seconds later, nearly cutting the old man off, Everly Styles, the one that volunteered, stepped forward, ready to be the first to speak. As per usual, there was unassailable confidence in her gaze. That gaze that scanned everyone else with scrutiny. The girl who never showed failure, always displayed utmost prominence, and was undoubtedly here for no one else but herself.

Everly. The classic, type-A overachiever, who could easily slip in with the mean girls, if she wasn't a bigger bitch than them. A girl with a few labels, but no depth beyond that.

There are some individuals who assume she is a third wave feminist because of how argumentative she can be in class. It's simply because she cannot hold her tongue when she knows others are wrong. High school would end and those particular girls were catty. A total waste of time. As far as her peers were concerned, she's just another trust fund baby.

And yet... her reality?

Well, she was kind of a loner.

Was she truly here for herself? Absolutely not. She was here to not disappoint the only person she cared about. Her father. She didn't care much about helping the world. Since when did she owe the world anything? Why should she care about anyone else? Internally, she wasn't looking forward to this equally as much as everyone else. However, for her father and for her resume, she would participate and get her hands dirty.

Make a difference and build character!

Ew, what does that even mean?

No one specified a dress code, so again, unlike the others, the volunteer was dressed in an everyday casual outfit that didn't suit the work they would be doing. Her casual outfits and outfits in general usually incorporated a skirt. This outfit was no exception.

The volunteer did dress down more so than usual, hardly as fashionable as she would prefer, but she was dressed down nevertheless. Everly would not be caught in pants unless she was absolutely forced to. The old man couldn't complain. She was here on her own free will! To 'build character'. The plan was to work and hardly break a sweat. Watch. She'd clean up this park in a jiffy (yeah right).

"I suppose I'll start us off. Hello, everyone." Everly glowed, her smile never faltering — as fake as it was. "I'm Everly. Everly Styles. Not that surnames are important or anything." Her father was a pretty big deal in science. "You're more than welcome to call me Evie, if saying Everly is too hard for you." What a cheeky girl. "I do so look forward to cleaning up things around here. Someone has to do it. Might as well be us!"

There. She spoke and now she was done.

The old man seemed lost for words.

The tan-skinned brunette scoffed from where she stood as she listened to the girl dressed in too nice of an outfit for what they were doing. ’Great princess decided to come play in the dirt today.’ Crossing her arms over her leather vest, Rowan rolled her eyes.

Here she was on a perfect Saturday stuck with other teens doing community service when there were much better things she could be doing with her time, like dirt biking through the woods, rather than doing this bullshit just because people didn’t care enough about the environment to throw their own shit away. But no, Rowan was stuck with Jockstrap 1 and 2, a princess, a girl who looked to much like a goody-goody, some chick she’s definitely seen around the police station before, and the old man in charge of watching over them. A great group to be stuck around… really great.

Rowan was pretty sure that of the other four wearing the JDS vest, three of them probably didn't even know truly know what it was like to be truly in trouble with the law. They probably made a stupid mistake and their parents got them out of a bigger punishment.

Speaking of the damn law, they decided to have a cop follow her all the way here to ensure she actually came this morning. Ro wasn’t that dumb to skip out on this like the other detentions, especially when she was threatened with juvie if she didn’t go. Yeah, she didn’t need that one on her record.

When silence filled the area she once again rolled her eyes and shifted her weight to her left foot. “Well since the rest of you are too scared to speak up I guess I’ll go. I’m Rowan, we aren’t friends so don’t even think of calling me anything else. Unlike princess over there, I don’t look forward to this bullshit.”

Peyton Saunders wasn’t a bad kid.

In fact, she was a good kid. A great kid. High marks at school, a ton of extracurriculars, and a kind hearted and charismatic personality that matched her long list of contributions to Angel Grove. She taught kids to surf on the weekends, volunteered at the Cherub County Soup Kitchen on Tuesday nights with her dad, and even tutored some of her peers in Calculus when they struggled to comprehend derivatives. So, what was a girl like her doing in a bright orange vest courtesy of the juvenile delinquent system?

A mistake. A huge, fat, ugly mistake.

The blonde had her arms crossed over her chest, closing herself off from the others, as she leaned against an oak tree in Angel Grove Park. Her curious mind was running at a mile a minute, trying to figure out how everyone else ended up in weekly community service work, but her lips remained closed and pursed. Peyton simply observed- wanted to take it all in and not jump to any conclusions. Glancing around at her peers, she took in their facial expressions, their body language and anything basically that could help her gauge their reactions to this situation.

Everly seemed more than pleased to be here, but Rowan, not so much. Peyton recognized them both from school, but since they didn't run in the same social circles, they had never spoken (naturally). Peyton knew that Rowan always found herself in trouble, so seeing her here wasn't the biggest surprise, but Everly being present was. Clearly, she was here on her own terms, since no one subjected to this against their own will would have such spunk to speak first and introduce themselves. Peyton couldn't say the same, and didn't need people knowing who she was and why she was here. Peyton was ashamed she was here.

Her guilty conscience was ever present, and she doubted that cleaning up trash was going to make it disappear. She had committed a crime, a legitimate crime that could've gotten someone killed. No candy wrapper was going to fix that. But this was her sentencing- in addition to her license being revoked for 30 days- and she was going to serve her time and do the damn thing. Peyton's actions lacked a moral compass and true character, so if this was going to help her on the path to earning integrity, than so be it. Building character didn't sound half bad.

With a deep sigh, Peyton walked towards everyone else, very well aware that she would have to make herself known at some point in order to get credit for showing up. Clearing her throat, she spoke in a calm and steady tone. "Peyton Saunders. I'm not exactly looking forward to this either, but I'm sure if we all work together we can get this done a whole lot faster- which would be ideal." The blonde looked around at the other teens, attempting to test the waters. "Hopefully we can make the best of this situation. Building character doesn't sound like the worst thing, right?"

The rules were simple. You fuck with his boy, he's gonna fuck you harder.

Fuck Christian for being a good friend, right? He was lucky to only be getting community service for the heinous crime that he had committed against a fellow citizen. For once a black man didn't get the short end of the stick when it came to the system, and he honestly didn't know how to feel about it. At the very least, he was surprised. Even after all of these years later, for what he did, he expected to be in juvie or even straight up prison. He got off easy. However, he was still wearing orange.

Seems like the rest of these yoo-hoos were more or less suffering from the same problem Christian was. Well, at least he had other people to share the misery with. There was his boy, who was actually there when he committed the crime that landed him here. There were also a lot more girls than he expected to be here. They must've really raised them different in this place. Usually there'd be more boys in a setting like this, but he guessed not.

As he was about to find the garbage picking apparatuses, he heard someone speak up. Definitely not the friendliest girl. But then again, they were here for a reason. The next girl to speak had a better attitude, and that was more up Christian's alley. "Christian Hill. Please don't call me Chris." Christian squinted, "I'll hurt you."

If Kiara's eyes had rolled any harder they would have been on the ground by now. It wasn't the juvenile delinquent officer that had Kiara so immediately skeptical; he was just doing his job. It was a shitty job, yes, but he was every bit as stuck on this weekend as the juveniles. It was her supposed character builders in arms that had Kiara damn near doubled over in laughter and blatant disbelief. Surely they weren't serious, right? They must have been Angel Grove High students, only they could be so pointedly arrogant for no real reason. She glanced at the others in kind when they spoke, a subtle glance with narrowed eyes as they told her, through body language or verbal, everything she needed to know.

There was the strong silent type, that being the male who didn't talk - if Kiara had to guess she'd assume he just wanted to be done with this and then go throw Frisbee in the park or something equally stupid. He definitely didn't stand out, which was probably more to his favor. He might well have understood what Kiara already had: none of these people were friends. Kiara was only going to see them for four hours one day for a month and then they'd never see each other again. Why try to make 'nice'.

There was Ms. Attitude who thought she was the alpha in this pack. That would have made Kiara smile if it wasn't so obvious. The dog who barked the loudest was the bitch that backed down. Anyone who wore a leather vest to manual labor was either trying to act like a boss bitch without actually being one, or else they were into some fucked up kinky shit. It stopped being a fashion statement in the late nineties and someone clearly didn't get the memo. Kiara would take her down first in a fight not because she was a threat, but because she would go down easily.

While Kiara was thinking of going down, she had to admit that the volunteer definitely looked good in a skirt. It was a shame they were given pokers but then, Kiara figured volunteer girl over there wasn't the type to bend forward to pick something up unless she was trying to seduce a teacher to get her out of a failing grade. Which was a shame as Kiara was curious if the pink was just the skirt. It was a shame that a good pair of legs went to a personality that, even from the brief introduction, Kiara knew was foul. Leather vest had it wrong. Volunteer wasn't a princess. She was a priss-ass. And that was worse. Kiara still would.

The other boy was trying a bit too hard there. So much so that Kiara assumed it was a failed attempt at lightening the mood. Everyone was going to call him Chris now, be it out of spite or because Christian didn't roll off the tongue as easily. She didn't care what he did but he didn't seem like he could hurt a fly let alone another person which really watered down his threat. If she had to guess? This was the first time a girl was even talking to him, and even then it was easier to say that girls were talking around him. If leather vest was all talk, then this dude was even more harmless.

The odd woman out was the blonde and not because she was blonde but because she was...genuine. Kiara didn't know or care if the others noticed, but Peyton didn't belong here based solely on the fact that she wasn't trying to intimidate or be a bitch, she was genuinely trying to make the best of a situation that probably stained her otherwise spotless record. In other words, Peyton was a good girl who didn't go bad but now had to be stuck with 'bad' girls who weren't good. Out of everyone there, Kiara only felt bad for the blondie. Priss-ass was trying to show how much better she was for deigning to do community service, silent surfer bro was like a caveman trying to understand tools, leather vest was all talk, and guy number two was probably going to rub one out to the fact that four girls looked at him for a hot second. But Blondie? She was trying and Kiara hoped that this month long affair wouldn't ruin her.

Kiara, who had said nothing so far, half expected the others to look her way for an introduction, but it wouldn't come. Once the others had spoken, and even then she had started beforehand, she was already poking at garbage and dropping it into her bag. She didn't know these people, they didn't go to her school so what difference did it make if they knew her name or not? The only thing that mattered was that her orange vest didn't clash with her pants. Unfortunately, it did clash with her shirt but at least it wasn't leather.

Kiara was operating on a very specific policy: if they didn't talk to her, she wasn't going to talk to them. They were no different than the garbage she was putting in the bag.

Now that’s just untrue. People don’t talk like that, do they?

The first person had introduced themselves, and James had to admit, it wasn’t a very good first impression, so to speak. She seemed to be, at least as far as he could tell, incredibly extra. And that wasn’t really James’s thing! He did, however, make a mental note to call her Everly forever, because fuck her and her fake smile. Nothing was too hard for him, least of all saying a name that was hardly two syllables.

“Well since the rest of you are too scared to speak up I guess I’ll go.”


Totally, that’s what it is. You didn’t just jump at the opportunity to speak before anyone else had a chance. We’re totally terrified. Jesus, what is this? The fucking Gathering?

“I’m Rowan, we aren’t friends so don’t even think of calling me anything else. Unlike princess over there, I don’t look forward to this bullshit.”


What else would we even call you? There’s no way to make that into a nickname! Princess? Is that what we’re calling her now? That’s gonna go right to her head — she seems the type.

Two down now, and this one seemed just as bad. Unnecessary aggression, check. Thinly veiled anger, check. She seemed extra too, just in different way than the girl who’d spoken before her. James was almost certain she was judging everyone before they even spoke; which he was doing too, so it was slightly hypocritical of him to think about that. James wanted a good feel for the crew he’d be dealing with though, before he spoke for himself.

Well, Peyton… you have a point. Faster is better! Maybe if we clean up enough, they’ll let us off early. Ha. Like that will happen.

She’s not bad.

James liked her. Sure, they were in a bad way. They were stuck out here on a perfectly fine Saturday, and they had to clean up trash. This girl, though, seemed bright and pleasant; and unlike Everly, Peyton didn’t seem to be fake about it. Her tone of voice and her body language had a sort of genuinity to it, and James appreciated that. Plus, she was super cute and that was an undeniable bonus.

“Christian Hill. Please don't call me Chris. I’ll hurt you.


James didn’t have to think about how he felt about this one. Christian was his best friend, and had been for most of his life. Christian was a good dude, and a better friend. James felt bad that his friend had wound up here; after all, it was mostly James’s fault. He’d gotten in a fight, and Christian had done what any friend would do: got involved.

James’s gaze then fell on the final person in their group, who was already set about the task. Strong, silent type? No. She is wearing a shirt with the eggo logo on it. Maybe she’s on the spectrum and doesn’t understand how social situations work… Nah, most likely? She’s just a bitch. James knew that was probably the case. After all, that had been the fact of the matter with two of the other three girls, and James had a feeling Peyton was the odd one out. It wasn’t going to be a fifty-fifty ratio, that was for sure.

This sucked. He reached down and stabbed a piece of paper that was floating with the wind, and deposited it into his trash bag. Jesus, why is there so much trash here anyway? Isn’t there like, a fine for littering? After the piece of trash was securely in the bag, James looked up at the people there with him, and decided to do the introductions.

“James Hartwell. It’s nice to meet you. Shitty place to do it, but whatever. Anyway, I think she —” James pointed at the girl who’d already set about picking up the trash with his poker. “— has the right idea. Why don’t we just get to work?” With that, he stabbed downward, skewering another piece of trash and dumping it in the bag again.

“Saving the world, one Skittles wrapper at a time.”

Manners maketh man. And woman. None of these rebels displayed proper etiquette during the introductory part of their long day. Including the hopeful blondie, Miss Peyton, deliberately trying to brighten the moment for these melodramatic, poor, unfortunate souls. This ultimately made her, such a sweet looking girl, be the 'true' shining star in this little pack of unlikely delinquents, aside from the princess, of course, as the teen with the loud mouth — Rowan — put it. Everly was here by choice and without punishment. Or to translate, she was here because she didn't need to be forced by some authority figure to give to the world. The world that they all should care about. The true heroine of this not-so-fairytale story was her. Obviously, her partners-in-crime for the day had their morals ass backwards. She, however, was perfect.

At any other time or day, Everly would not be caught dead associating with these godforsaken kids. She could just see their futures right before them. One would end up behind bars, the other working at a gas station, and she had no doubt Blondie or Loud Mouth would have unprotected sex and be knocked up before they even graduated. Her faith in them was non-existent.

Most of these delinquents didn't shimmer. Didn't hold an ounce of likeness and potential for goodness. Not like the blonde did. The boys most definitely got in trouble for something stupid, like a brawl. Someone got angry and couldn't hold back. Then it was simply a matter of time before they got caught.

The handsome one on the surface, James, who looks like your stereotypical jock, was last to speak. He was silent up until the end, while the strange Asian, who she couldn't recognize for the life of her, already started doing the task at hand. Picking up trash. The trash that is told to help them build character. She'd have to ask for her name later.

These two were the silent types. The ones you tread lightly around because of all that festered in them. Dangerous. The dark haired, pale-skinned beaut was an enigma to Everly, while the brute, she felt, she could read like a book. Her thoughts about him would stay to herself, though. He wasn't worth the time or effort to unravel.

Then there was Loud Mouth. The girl that set herself up for disaster, who showed her anger without restraint. Was Everly afraid of her? Not really. Even if Loud Mouth could bruise her easily, Everly would be capable of doing more damage to her ego, pride, and self worth. Now, Everly knew she was easy to tease and undoubtedly react with so much bark and drooling saliva. The one without technique and acted out like a child. Perhaps, she should make this a game.

How many times could she make Loud Mouth red?

Games were fun when it involved people.

As for Christian, Evie could respect his desire to be called a certain way, he came across as another person easy to tease. But more in the sense of just him solely being in an environment that was predominantly estrogen filled than testosterone. He wasn't interesting enough for her to bother with on the first day. No, her eyes were set on one person only.

Blondie.

Without hesitation, since everyone was already going straight to business, she sauntered to Peyton with an adoring smile.

Everly knew she gave off the vibe that she was better than them. That is because she was better than them. The only way to succeed in this world was to think highly of yourself. Each and every single one of them had a choice on how to deal with a situation, they chose poorly, which brought them here. Even with her father's reputation, being a well respected scientist in robotics and cybernetics, truly the future of the world, Everly chose to earn her keep. Succeeding with flying colors in school, already researching internships within her father's company, being a better mother to Zeke than Charlotte was, giving him the time of day to make sure he doesn't feel invisible, and simply being the best her she could be, making sure she was someone to be proud about...

"Peyton. What a lovely name." She approached the blonde with poise and grace, already making her claim on her new 'friend'. "Working together sounds like a splendid idea, why don't we go over there?" Everly used her trash picker to point in the direction she wanted to go, away from the others, closer to the lake, "Spread out and grab some distance. I'm sure with Rowan's need to get this done and over with, she won't want help taking care of 'this bullshit'." When Everly mimicked Rowan's words, she poked a receipt and put it in her trash bag to put an emphasis on their general vicinity.

"Come, come. We have so much to do and so little time." Everly gestured for Blondie to follow her, not thinking she needed to drag her to get her to agree and follow. Peyton was marked as easy prey, so it was in Everly's nature to take her in her arms first.

Metaphorically speaking.
