This might have something to do with the fact that a majority of these so called friends aren't real. Skyler knows they follow him for two reasons: his family, and fear. While Skyler can't quite claim to be the most intelligent student of his year, he is the most dangerous. As head of the Dueling club and undefeated within, Skyler is known for his wandwork. While he is considered generally quiet, nobody considers him unfriendly, especially given the rumors that he is the reason there is no bullying within his year from any Slytherins. Nobody is quite sure how he will treat a true friend, as nobody has broken his shell, despite him generally being surrounded by almost rotating groups of admirers from Slytherin and other houses. [b]Background[/b] The Grey family is quite famous in the wizarding world, though not much is actually known about it, except that they study alternative and ancient magic, supposedly having a vault of magical artifacts no other family can compare to. Most well known is the partly true story of Dorian Gray, Skyler's grandfather. He did, in fact, have a portrait of himself that aged while he remained young, but much of the rest of the novel is false. Dorian was supposedly a dark wizard, though no government ever brought him to justice, and nothing had ever been proven. Growing up, Skyler was immersed in a quiet world of magic, magic very different from what is taught at Hogwarts. Skyler grew up in a manor hidden away from the world, never wanting for anything, but not really ever knowing much about the world itself-until he went to Hogwarts. At Hogwarts he was initially shy and quiet, but excited to be well received. The first two years he was like most students: fairly ordinary, though maybe a bit smarter than most. In his third year everything changed. Skyler joined the Dueling club and immediately challenged two of his friends. These two had been with him from almost day one, and they were also Slytherins. In a two on one duel Skyler publically humiliated them and walked away wordlessly. There had always been rumors within Slytherin they wanted to take advantage of the naive young Gray, rumors thought to be true from then on. That year was a remarkable change: Not only did everyone in his year know who he was, they mostly avoided him. Things changed for others too, as Slytherin third years that were bullies became more timid and became anti-social. In his fourth year there were no more bullies and people adapted to his new status. Finally, in his fifth year, things settled mostly, except for a few strange rumors about him. Skyler was constantly surrounded by admirers for his record, and puberty certaintly helped: Skyler turned out to be fairly attractive.
