In the novel there would be some areas of the Oasis that limited what equipment you could use. Items were broadly categorised into either magic or technology, so some areas only allowed magic equipment while others only allowed technology; there were also unlimited areas where anything could be use and then safe areas where everything was locked down.

Personally I was going to be awkward and make a melee focused character wherever possible.

I'd like to see a mix though; some combat, some racing, some flying. It depends on what kind of competition this is, but I'd hope to see a varied mix of challenges.
