Unknown Forest

Delusions of grandeur. It was common among the younger crowd, even more so nowadays with the rise of video games and social pressures. But Honami wasn't his patient, and she wasn't the only one who underwent their fight. He wanted to smile and nod and discard her opinion entirely. He wanted to assure her that everything would be alright while pondering the true explanations behind her struggles. But she made too much sense. Everything that they'd gone through sounded too close to something he'd see in a commercial or magazine advertisement.

"I'll admit I don't know that much about geography, but I've never heard the name of this forest in my life," said Kaito. He bit his lip and pondered Honami's last words, at a loss on how to act.

If he stepped out of the box of reason for a moment, he could see how concluding that they had died made sense. But there had to be some other explanation that could work under the confines of reality. People didn't just die and wake up in an afterlife that had creatures poised to kill them. "It's possible we were drugged and moved here by someone. That could explain why our minds are having a difficult time trying to adjust to our surroundings," he proposed. It was a shaky theory at best, and came with some worrying implications as to what the other two had just done, but he wasn't about to accept the idea of dying and reviving.

Tarashima Forest
Hiroko listened earnestly and tilted her head at the mention of Tarashima Forest. As Honami pointed out, there was no such thing in Japan. But, then again, the woman doesn't seem to know what Japan is. It was then that suddenly Honami broke out into laughter which startled Hiroko for a moment as her hand instinctively tightened around the arrow she had picked up earlier. And then she went on about something anime-related - a new genre called isekai. Hiroko wasn't exactly known for watching anime even as a younger child due to time constraints and lack of ability to do so. But, as odd as it may seem, Honami's observation might actually make the most sense.

But to think that they would have died and come back to life? Being thrown into a world they didn't know. Reincarnated in their usual clothing? It wasn't a comfortable idea to accept.

Kaito offered another explanation. Something more sound of mind - something that is more solidified in the logic of their world. "I doubt even drugs can mask humans as goblins." Hiroko pointed out, gesturing to the three dead bodies quite a ways from them. "And if we were drugged and moved here, what would be the point of her lying to us? What would they gain from that?" She then moved to gesture to the purple-haired girl.

She looked down at the bow and arrow in her hands and continuing. "And I'd rather accept Honami's theory... because I've never held a bow and arrow in my life and yet I just managed to stick two arrows into their heads." Hiroko looked back at Honami. "Does this 'isekai' cover that? Being given skills beyond what you know?" It was crazy to believe that a genre of an anime would happen to them but she was willing to risk believing that at this point because it's what made more sense.

The purple-haired girl took a step back as the three began conversing in a way that made her nervous.

Honami, to her, had gone from being furious with her to strangely manic. Her continuous mention of Japan concerned her, but when she uttered words she did not understand such as otaku. It concerned her even more when Honami suggested the three of them were dead. Did the green-haired girl think they were products of necromancy? When Kaito suggested they had been drugged she nearly felt it in her bones to run. Goblins to her were terrifying creatures but they were also fairly predictable. These three, in their strange clothes, were not.

“Um, who are you three, exactly? I apologize,” She paused as she gave a formal Japanese-like bow, “but, it seems your predicament is quite strange. If I did not owe you a debt for saving my life, I would probably think you mad. Isekai? Anime? Japan?”

"Drugged? Really?" Honami scoffed. "Listen, Kaito. My parents run a pharmaceutical company. I might not have the education they have, but I probably know more than you about how certain drugs work just by mere hearsay. Not once have I heard of any drug that-" She held out multiple fingers, counting each point. "-A: causes you to fall unconscious; B: allows you to read languages you've never read before, as well see creatures that should exist only in fiction in person; and C: gain some kind of aptitude as if you've trained all your life."

For someone who was older than Honami, Kaito was certainly being naive, or so she felt. Sure, her theory was absolutely crazy, but how else could they explain everything? Unknown languages, goblins, this girl and sudden aptitudes. This couldn't be work of some drug, and besides, like Hiroko said, what would anyone have to gain from drugging three random strangers and dragging them out to the forest?

"As for what isekai covers," Honami pondered, wondering how to phrase her next words without giving her NEET status away. "I'd have to say yes, I think? There was a popular anime going around sometime ago. Something about a kid who became a powerful swordsman and saved thousands of lives. I suppose the basis is that the main character, or characters for that matter, go to a different world and suddenly become an expert at everything or something?"

Honami bit her lip as she fought trying to celebrate. Had her theory been correct, then they had to be the main characters, no doubt! To be the hero was an otaku's dream! If only she had internet service, then she could've told all her friends about it. But then again, they might think her crazy, too. Sure, it was a dream of theirs, but it would never happen, right? But then how does someone explain everything that has been happening?!

When the purple-haired girl spoke again, Honami woke up from the celebration inside her head. "Huh? Oh, yeah. I'm Ebisawa Honami don't you dare call me Ebi." Honami replied, lowering her voice to where only the girl could hear. If this was really a different world, then surely there was no way that this girl knew of Japanese customs. Therefore, it was best to get such childish (and insulting) nicknames out the way as soon as possible.

"This one is Ikazuchi Hiroko," Honami continued, pointing to the brown-haired girl. Then, she pointed to Kaito. "And this dork is Iyasu Kaito. It seems you're just as clueless to us as we are to our situation, so could we have directions to the nearest town? To figure things out?"

“Okay.”

It was an awkward response, but the purple-haired girl seemed to listen despite Honami not really helping her understand the situation. Though her mention of people going to another world and being granted powers did give her some ease of mind.

There were many legends and prophecies in her world, so the idea that she had run into three powerful people at such a difficult time didn’t sound all that absurd to her. They were still very strange people, and she was pretty sure that Honami was absolutely terrifying. Perhaps, if they were lucky the aura she exuded from sheer will alone would be enough to cause the monsters of the Tarashima Forest to give the group of four a wide berth. The hope of such things gave her some semblance of hope as things seemed to finally calmed down.

“I’m Ipharia. Ipharia Hano. I’d gladly help you guys find the nearest town or village, and answer any other questions you might have. If you are heroes from another world and all, I guess the gods left the instructions in the aether so its my responsibility or something.”

Tarashima Forest
The more she actually heard about this isekai genre, the more convincing it is that it was what happened to them. Hiroko wasn't exactly a believer of the supernatural but if that's the only explanation that would fit their current predicament, then so be it. It is good for them that Honami seemed to know what this isekai genre is, even if she just heard it being thrown around. It did help her kind of come into terms with things that were happening right now, or at least have a plausible explanation drilled into her head so she doesn't feel like she doesn't have complete control over her life right now.

And then they were thrown into introductions and thankfully, Honami had continued on to introduce them as well. "Just Hiroko is fine." Hiroko gave a bow of her head as she was gestured to before starting to look around. Thankfully, everything seemed silent again and there were no goblins reinforcements after them. Hiroko did hope that they can get over to the next time without encountering more of them. Even with these newfound... skills, she doubted they would be able to continue fending enemies off.

"Gods, huh?" Hiroko mused to herself as she turned back to grab a quiver from one of the dead goblin's bodies and collecting the arrows she could. Who knows when these could be useful. And, well, considering the goblins and that they were in a forest of an unknown world that seems to have danger written at every turn, Hiroko was sure they'd start to need these sooner than later. "What exactly do you do, Ipharia? What brings you to this forest alone if it's pretty dangerous?" She couldn't help but ask as she slid the arrows into the quiver before walking back to the group, waiting for Ipharia to start leading the way.

“Oh, me? I’m a cleric, which is kind of like, I serve a god, or well, a god’s values. In return the god allows me to use magic attuned to their divinity. Spells they approve of.”

The explanation was a simple enough one, though Ipharia tried her best to explain what exactly a cleric was. After all, these were strangers summoned from another world, so who was she to know if they knew anything about clerics or magic? They certainly didn't have goblins where they came from, so she tried her best to state things in a easy to explain way as if she was explaining her occupation and responsibilities to children who had limited education of the world around them.

It was with that in mind she elaborated on what brought her to the Tarashima Forest, though it could not have been any more mundane if she tried.

“I'm traveling from village-to-village to help where I can. It's part of my pilgrimage, my oath. The goblins ambushed me as I was packing up my camp. Unfortunately for them. As for the forest being dangerous? I mean it has monsters and a lot of history, but the whole world is dangerous. There's a really old temple of my goddess here, so I figured I'd get there. To experience it?”

Unknown Forest
Kaito's face didn't show much emotion in response to being discredited, which must have been a surprise to the others. It was a perk developed as a result of working in a career devoted entirely to the solution of conflict. To Kaito, his displays of cowardliness from earlier were a far cry from his typical professional behavior, an outlier caused by being suddenly placed in danger.

"Hallucinations are a symptom of many conditions, and can cause many other effects on their own. This disconnect between the 'self' and our surroundings is typical." He let out a small sigh of frustration. "But what makes this different is that all of us are seeing the same things... which would be..." He struggled to find a way to conclude his hypothesis, letting his eyes flicker down towards his journals before thinking better of it. This was something a color-coded frequent issues notebook couldn't handle. "Hmm, situations where multiple people have shared the same delusion have existed. Much rarer than your typical case, but still within the bounds of reality."

The way he spoke, it was like he was ignoring the purple haired girl. It wasn't intentional, he had just subconsciously lumped her in with the rest of the strange occurrences in the forest. Her name being Ipharia only solidified her place in his mind as an additional obstacle in the way of the truth.

"...My name is Kaito," he said, resting his eyes on her with a sense of unease. It was hard to dissect someone's behavior when they were so legitimately naive.

He listened quietly as she explained her background. Despite having hoped for information that could have helped him make sense of everything, even someone like Kaito who didn't keep up to date with pop culture knew he hit a dead end as soon as the word cleric left her mouth.

"Divinity, spells, oath, goblins..." he muttered to himself, as if he were carefully checking off a list of ailments. "Pilgrimage... monsters." His lips pursed. Another, larger sigh escaped his mouth.

"We might actually be in another world."

"Oh, now you believe me? Thanks for doubting me." Honami snapped at Kaito. The concept of being transported to another world sounded insane, Honami knew, but how else could they explain the freak show that had happened since they woke up in the middle of nowhere?

"Anyway, where was I?" Honami spoke, turning her attention back to the purple-haired girl. "Since you're a cleric and all, maybe it would be better for us to come to the temple with you? If we really are from another world, then surely the priests there might know something of our plight. Maybe there's some ancient prophecy or something about us, otherwise I'm not sure why fate would have dragged us here and given us powers, apparently. Then again, fate and destiny work in mysterious ways, I guess."

Before the purple-haired girl could reply Honami spoke up again. "I suppose we can help fend off goblins, too, if that's what you'd want in return."

“I mean, if that’s what you want.”

Ipharia gave Honami a nod, considering her offer of protection. It was with this consideration that Ipharia brought up something that she realized as things had calmed down and she got to look at the three heroes outside of the tension of battle and after-battle.

“I'm honestly not that surprised that you guys have been summoned, though like, you guys are... we're going to need to stop in a village and get you acclimated to things. Maybe some new clothes? As your trusted guide I will help you however I can. Obviously the goddess of the light has joined us as a sign.”

Tarashima Forest
So Ipharia was a Cleric. Well, if this really was a fantasy world, then a Cleric would be very useful to have around right? They're the types to have those healing spells and that should come in handy if they were going to fight more. She'd rather have something more than a shot of morphine if she was stabbed in the gut by some sneaky Goblin or whatever. Hiroko looked down and let out a sigh. Looks like she was getting used to this really quickly, but she guessed the sooner, the better.

Honami gave an exchange of taking them to the temple (to find out if there is any record of any heroes being summoned) for protection. If they managed to continue being as skilled as they were earlier, Hiroko wanted to at least believe that they could stand a chance against some of the monsters of this land. It was not an assurance but a hope. Nevertheless, it was better to believe than not to since it would just make her give up. And, well, that wasn't an option here.

"Fitting in might be better." Hiroko agreed, grabbing her coat. "I imagine it would be better to not stand out for now. I'd like to get a feel of the land too." She'd feel better if she knew how to act in this place. She wondered what kind of civilization they had. With magic at hand, there was surely some differences.

"With all due respect the idea of waking up in another world seems, um... unlikely." He was running out of energy, and wasn't in the mood to spend so much effort phrasing his words to be their usual inoffensive selves. Honami, like him, was another piece of the puzzle. But this puzzle had hundreds of pieces and possible leads, with many of them currently dangling in front of him. Why focus on just one?

He turned to Hiroko, his back straighter than usual. "Fitting in would be a good first step. I wonder if we can recreate our experience with the language from earlier." Casting more light on that first little glimpse into this new life would no doubt provide answers. "If there are things in this world that we are, for whatever reason, already acquainted with, then heading towards civilization could give us some answers."

“I guess it doesn't matter how likely it is or not?”

Ipharia shrugged as it appeared she had gained back her composure prior to being interrogated by Honami. After brushing off the leaves off her cloak, she considered what the others had said about accompanying her to the old temple. She wondered if she should bring up that the temple she was heading to didn't exactly have anyone else there, given that it had been abandoned years upon years ago. But then again, Ipharia didn't exactly want to conjure more of the temper that Honami had shown her that she had in large amounts.

She looked back eastward, in the direction that she had come from when the goblins had chased her off the old road going to the next townstead.

“My map and other supplies are at my camp, so I’m going to start heading that way. Of course, if you heroes have, like, questions? I can try to answer them, I think.”

Hiroko agreed partly with Kaito - he still hadn't accepted Honami's reasoning but he'll come into terms with it soon enough - but the plan of seeing what they were or were not familiar with in this new world was a good one. Languages should come easy since Honami did explain that being summoned would mean that they would be able to understand the languages of the natives of this world, and they even experienced it firsthand with the inscriptions and the goblins.

She turned to Ipharia and gave her a nod. "Alright, let's head over there then. Let's not waste any more time yeah?" She told them. They were burning daylight and she'd really rather not traverse through the dark in some unfamiliar world. Even if they did have a native with them now and even if they would wake up to some mysterious power while in this world, she wanted them to be safe in a town rather than on a road. At least there, it was relatively assured that there would be helpful in arm's reach.

"Before we get to a town, can you tell us more about this... kingdom or whatever the hell we're in right now?" It would be better to have some form of background about their location than not. At least they won't seem too lost when someone approaches them. It would probably be enough for only Ipharia to know that they're from another world. Hiroko dreaded the idea of people being far too curious for their own good about their unique condition.

Kaito's eyes widened at Hiroko's question. Weren't there more important things to ask first?

"Just how likely would you say it would be for us to run into more... erm... goblins?"

The world goblins left his mouth in a way that sounded like he was learning a new language. Or if you were Honami, a supportive parent cautiously watching their child play a video game. He was unconfrontational to the point of comedy, and yet his profession, the thing he had worked the hardest for in his entire life, was being invalidated with every passing second spent in this fairy tale world that insisted it was real. It was quite the odd clash of emotions to have on the inside, to say the least. This turmoil wouldn't last forever, though. They'd arrive to the nearest spatter of civilization and then he would absolutely, positively, without a shadow of a doubt know the answer to this conundrum. Definitely.

“Pretty common.”

Ipharia responded, as she moved through the forest in the direction her camp was stationed.

Goblins were common creatures, though they were as dangerous as much as they were a nuisance. In a large forest like Tarashima she was pretty sure there were dens a many and that wasn't accounting for stragglers or outcasts. Explaining goblins to a bunch of heroes who had no knowledge of anything in the world was something she found difficult, but perhaps as they traveled together they would grow more accustomed to such things.

“As for the Kingdom, well, you’re talking about Alma. It’s a pretty sizeable monarchy, though we’re pretty much on the outskirts of its borders. We’re nearly in uncharted territory. What do you exactly want to know?”

Tarashima Forest
Hiroko's face scrunched up when she heard that the goblins were very common. They'd likely have another encounter if they continued on, but at least Hiroko knew about them. She could be more alert - and she had a weapon with her. Way better than being taken by surprise again like earlier. It had been lucky for her that one of the goblin's bow had rolled off to her. The bow may have been small for her but at least she would have something to protect herself with.

So this was called the Alma Kingdom - a monarchy. That was unusual for the modern day, but since this was some sort of alternate universe, she guessed that a monarchy was the norm. And this forest was on the borders of the kingdom. Maybe that's the reason that there were still goblins around and that there wasn't much of a civilization around. That and they were kind of inside a forest.

"Who rules the country? What kind of traditions should we be aware of? Anything to avoid?" It was the first things she wanted to know when she came to a foreign area - well aside from the first question, but that was because they were now in a place with a monarchy and she assumed that they would kind of need to know about that. This information would make it easier for her to assimilate into the kingdom. They can't get in trouble.

“That'd be Princess Avantasia. At least, while the King is sick.”

The purple-haired cleric mused, though she didn’t seem quite sure how to address the second part of Hiroko’s question. Explaining traditions wasn’t something she had to do, ever, due to the fact of how other entities interacted with Alma and by extension the Silvercrest Dynasty. Even a lowly peasant knew how to tread within the Nine Kingdoms. There hadn't been a foreign entity that had inexperience with nobility in Ipharia's entire lifetime.

By the time she finally returned to her camp she had tried her best to explain the courtesies and taboos, which may have not seemed to foreign to the three heroes had they an inkling of media and literature that resembled Eferion, which Ipharia explained was the name of the planet or at least it was by the conventions of the Nine Kingdoms of which Alma was the most powerful. As the three stood around what was once the cleric’s campsite, they could gather their thoughts as Ipharia collected her things, though much of her things had been trampled on by the goblins when they pursued her through the forest.

Ipharia obviously was not too pleased at dusting off her scrolls and maps, but at least she had survived.

Honami stepped back as her companions began to ask questions about the world from the cleric they saved. For what it was worth, she was already all too familiar regarding how the world they had been transported to worked, though it wasn't exactly hard to be previously familiar when all you did was play video games all day, even to the point of skipping school.

"If the king is sick, then perhaps that might be the reason we were summoned." Honami mused whilst Ipharia dusted off her belongings. "Like that game... what was it called, Knight Arthurs X Gallant Heaven? The circumstances aren't exactly the same, but the story has Arthur bestowing great power on those destined to save the realm, like what just happened when we fought those goblins. I'm sure we all felt it in one way or another. Anyway, I was thinking maybe the king could've wished us into this world to do something he could not."

Honami shrugged. "They probably wouldn't let us have a direct meeting with the king, or the princess, for that matter, but it might be worth a shot. Though if we're on the outskirts of the kingdom, that means we've got quite a trek before us, right?"

“If the Princess summoned you, then why didn't you get summoned to the capital?”

Ipharia rose her hand to her lips, thinking about the prospect.

The Silvercrest’s had ruled Alma for as long as she could remember, so it wasn’t totally out there that they had some amazing magical artifacts and tomes in their vault. The shorter hero’s idea wasn’t that “out there”, but Ipharia wasn’t entirely convinced. Though, it was true that the kingdom was in dire straits for more than one reason. The biggest reason wasn’t that the king was sick, either. That role went to someone much scarier than illness and age. It went to The Black King. Ipharia’s violet irises looked over to Honami and then to the two other heroes. If they had been summoned to stop the Black King then she needed to get them to the capital as fast as she could. She wondered if she needed to cancel her pilgrimage.

If she was wrong about the reason they were summoned then she would have only delayed her journey by a few weeks. If she was right and didn't? She nearly quivered at the thought.

“If I can get you to the grand highway, we can get to the capital in a few weeks.”
