We don't have to stay directly in canon, just in the general timeline.  It would probably be best if no character distinctly told Sam that Dean was alive, unless it's vague and could draw into Dean showing up out of nowhere.  It's a bit important when introducing the Angels.  Then we can go completely off the wings.

So, anyone interacting with Sam...just keep in mind that he has no clue his brother is alive, and will most likely not believe it, until he sees him, himself.
