It can have both and I encourage the use of multiple characters provided you dont go crazy with it. If you want to create your own kingdom/grouo by all means you are feee to do so.

As for the inivitations, all player characters are there for reasons you can create. If you create a character of nobility perhaps you were formally invited but if you are a sellsword for example you hear of this grand gathering in the hopes of meeting potential new clients etc. Ideally this gathering hopefully encourages player interactions as I move certain plot characters around to advance the story
