Heh, Desmond's proud of himself for beating the Gyms, but he's much more proud of the fact he got to meet the wonderful Gym Leaders within each of them. Having someone notice him for his deeds... That'll be flattering, but also embarrassing for him. 

And Mt. Battle is a hell of an event, considering it's on top of a volcano, and all the battles are double-battles, requiring strong bonds not only between trainer and pokemon, but throughout the trainer's entire team as well. It's one trainer going through a hundred with only minor breaks after every ten successful wins. One loss and they are forced to start all over, which of course happened to Desmond because he was only fighting with Ampharos & Magcargo. He caught the rest of his team when he went to Johto to become stronger.

And dude. Desmond would consider that game of chess to be the most hype shit ever. :rock
