Because this setting started as a Pathfinder campaign, it uses a system of copper, silver, gold and platinum coins on the continent of Vein that this particular RP takes place in.

10 copper = 1 silver
10 silver = 1 gold
10 gold = 1 platinum

Most commonfolk deal in copper and silver on a regular basis. To pull out a gold coin would essentially be like pulling out a hundred dollar bill. The average laborer would work for weeks to receive a handful of gold, and platinum is typically only seen by nobility or professionals in a given field. 

Different continents or nations, however, may use alternate currency.
