While there are definitely giant robots in the military's arsenal, the Pilots that support Constellations are usually in mechs around twenty to fifty feet tall. Fast enough to be used as transport in a tough situation (and occasionally to keep up with particularly speedy Constellations), while still capable of sustained fire against a wide variety of foes.

Pilots need to be able to deal with any sort of threat aimed at their Constellations, as making their charges waste energy against chaff that aren't the intended elites they're sent to fight might get them killed. Most Constellations are still very much human, and very quick to be felled by energy weapon fire, so swarms of mooks, mobile artillery platforms and enemy giant robots are some of what Pilots have to be able to clear.
