The Zombie Apocalypse Begins

NOTE: At the moment, this role play is closed to KingOfNowhere. We are going to test it out – sort of a beta test – before I consider opening it to other players.

The Story

A rabies-like virus has exploded across the city, turning a small portion of the population into ravenous, flesh-devouring cannibals. Of the population:

5% have become these creatures, called DarkStalkers.

15% are still alive and in hiding. (This number grows smaller with every passing day.)

The remaining 80% have already been killed and eaten upon by the DarkStalkers. Their ravaged corpses lie about the city, rotting away.

The DarkStalkers

DarkStalkers are called this because:

During the dark of nighttime or in the deep shadows during the daytime, they are quick moving, nimble, fierce creatures. (Imagine the Dark Seekers from the movie, "I Am Legend".)

In the daylight, though, they are slow moving creatures that -- while still dangerous in great numbers or enclosed spaces -- are much slower and less agile. (Imagine the Zombies from the television series, "The Walking Dead".)
The DarkStalkers are not exactly big thinkers:

They don't understand door handles and other such devices.

They can't distinguish between a wall and a door that might be in that wall, and if they use the latter at all, it's only because it was unlocked and open and they incidentally pushed it open.

They don't crawl under objects (such as automobiles) or through tight spaces (like gaps between automobiles) to seek prey, unless they have direct line-of-sight of that prey through those gaps.

They have other such characteristics that will come to light soon enough.

Your beginning situation:

You are one of the lucky few who have survived. You and 4 other survivors – henceforth known as Player Characters (PCs) – are safe inside the city's Police Department. These PCs are:

You, the Sheriff. You begin the story as the Leader of your Community.

2 Deputies:

1 is a Male, for whom you will perform die rolls and write roleplay text.

1 is a Female, for whom we share performance of die rolls (explained more later) but for whom I will generally write roleplay text.

2 inmates:

1 is a Male, for whom you perform die rolls and write roleplay text.

1 is a Female, for whom we share performance of die rolls (explained more later) but for whom I will generally write roleplay text.

Note: The list above is for my initial writing partner, KingOfNowhere. If you are another writer who I welcome to the story later, none of this applies to you; we will figure out something for you, I promise.

Over time, you will welcome more Survivors to your Community. These new folk can become PCs if you wish to roleplay them or NPCs – Non- Player Characters – if you wish them to simply be extra bodies to perform tasks … or act as sacrificial lambs for hungry DarkStalkers.

Because you are in the Police Station, you have firearms, ammunition, body armor, and -- for now -- security.

Unfortunately, you only have enough food for a week or so. You're also going to run out of other expendables: first aid supplies, medications, etc. To get more, you'll have to go out into the city to find them.

While you begin with electrical power, water supply, sewer service, etc., these services may fail at some point. If you want them back, you're going to have to figure something out, aren't you? Maybe you'll find a Builder, Technician, Scientist, etc.

Your PC’s Roles:

Your survivors have Primary and Secondary Roles, including but not limited to:
These Roles include:

Leaders: lead the Community, duh.

Fighters: protect the Community.

Builders: build perimeter barriers, reclaim properties, construct infrastructure, and more.

Preachers, Bartenders, and (sexual) Companions: increase happiness.

Recruiters: recruiting newly discovered Survivors.

Scouts: investigate new areas, locating Survivors and Resources, as well as hordes of DarkStalkers.

Scientists: research things that improve the Community.

Technicians: build and operate things, such as power and water sources and much more.

Doctors, Nurses, and Field Medics: fix the injured, duh.

And more to be added later.

Your PC’s Skills:

Your PC's success depends on their Skill Level:

Each PC is initially identified by a Role for which they have a higher than average Skill Level.

Skill levels may be increased through experience.

They may also be increased by education after you Community reclaims a school and gains Teachers.

Die Roll Basics:

Die Rolls are central to the game portion of the roleplay.

For simplicity's sake, we use only a 6-sided die (1d6), though:

Sometimes, you may roll more than one die: 2d6, 5d6, etc.

And sometimes, you may have a modifier that will add to or take from the roll's result: 1d6+3 or 2d6-4.

Many actions taken by PCs will require 2 separate die rolls:

The first may establish the success or failure of the mission.

The second may establishes the magnitude of that success or failure.

Generally speaking:

A low die roll is bad and a high roll is good.

At times, though, the opposite is true.

Scouting Die Rolls:

Scouts work alone, without Fighter protection, to maintain silence. (This may change later.)

Scouts investigate areas of different size, from single rooms to full building floors to entire city blocks. The number of DarkStalkers, resources, and/or Survivors are often magnified with the larger size of areas investigated.

Scouts may discover DarkStalkers, resources, and/or additional Survivors in the same location. (Obviously, if DarkStalkers and Survivors are in the same location, the latter must be hiding or trapped.)
Scouting can be as much as a 4-die roll process:

Roll for a "Taking a Peek".

Roll for actual "Scouting".

Roll for "Recovery" if injured.

Roll for "DarkStalkers Discovered" if such exist.
Taking a Peek:

Performed from the safe side of the secured perimeter, meaning the Scout can't be harmed or killed.

A Scout can only roll "Taking a Peek" once per day, and no other Scout may roll for it for the same space/area in that same day.

Roll 1d6 and subtract from the PC's Scouting Skill Level:

<3: Peek is inconclusive.

3: Scout spots DarkStalkers. Skip to "DarkStalkers Discovered".

4: Scout spots evidence of Survivors. Skip to "Scouting" (if you wish to do that).

5: Scout spots resources. Skip to "Scouting" (if you wish to do that).
Scouting: Roll 1d6 and add +1 modifier for each Scouting Skill Level >5:

1: Attacked and killed by DarkStalkers. (Skip "Recovery" and "DarkStalkers Discovered": you're dead!)

2: Attacked and injured by DarkStalkers before escaping; no time to investigate for Survivors or Resources.

3: Attacked and injured by DarkStalkers before escaping; discovered Resources but had no time to salvage.

4: Attacked by DarkStalkers but escaped without injury; discovered Resources but only salvaged what you could carry.

5: NO DarkStalkers; discovered Survivors. Perform "Recruitment" roll (found below).

6: NO DarkStalkers; discovered Resources. Roll for "Salvage" (found below).
Recovery: This is the one of those cases where a bigger die roll is bad. Roll and modify as described:

Roll 3d6 and modify for EACH of the following:

-2 if you have a trained Medic or Nurse.

-2 if you have a Surgeon.

-2 if you have reclaimed a Clinic and have a Surgeon.

-2 if you have reclaimed a Hospital and have a Surgeon.

AFTER modifiers:

12+: you die of your injuries or infection.

11: you are permanently disabled; no more Scouting.

10 or less: this is the number of days you are out of action.

"DarkStalkers Discovered": This is another case of where bigger rolls are bad. Round fractions down:

1d6: a single room.

2d6: An apartment, home, or small office.

3d6: An open, multi-floor building (such as a warehouse or commercial building). Apartment buildings and such are usually divided by closed doors. Common sense must be applied to determine whether you are rolling for an "apartment" or a "multi-floor building".

4d6: A city block.

Obviously, not done yet.
