Avery rubbed Nero’s back, smiling encouragingly and nodding. He rose to his feet with Nero in his arms. He paused when Nic and Cassi went ahead first and decided to wait when he heard Nic ask Cassi what had happened. Nero swore in German, causing Avery to laugh.

Cassi wrapped her arm around Nic’s, leaning into him as they walked. She was half tempted to have him carry her, but as easily as he seemed to be able to pick her up and set her on kitchen counters, Cassi didn’t want to test Nic’s ability for endurance.
