Barbara Hambly's [i]The Time of the Dark[/i]. It's an interesting read. 

She also does a good vampire novel, [i]Those Who Hunt by Night[/i] - Victorian London, a college professor who used to work in India as part of her Majesty's Secret Service comes home to find his house dark except for his study. His pistol is in his desk in the study, only when he sneaks up the servant stairs, he finds his wife unconscious and his gun neatly disassembled. 

His visitor is a vampire who has a problem. Someone has been going around killing the vampires of London - but it can only be another vampire, few humans know about them - and usually very briefly. Since the vampire can't trust them, he needs to bring in an outsider.

I'd like to try for one of the five spots. I've got a character mostly completed, but sometimes I think of a better one afterward.
