His gambit failed, and it appears that he made the wrong move. True, he is still alive and unharmed. But the doppelganger was smarter than he thought, and Elijah failed to land another hit on it and end the thing. Even worse in its mocking nature, it decided to slit the throat of one of the Blinds. There was nothing he could do to stop it, and he had failed to end this fight before someone died. Even if mind controlled, he could have saved her, but it is too late now.

Elijah could feel the anger rising in him and he tightly gripped the spear but still managed to keep control. While anger could help him in this case, it could also make him commit another mistake and one that could led to more deaths. Thus, he stove to keep it in check. 

So Elijah watched as the doppelganger tried to slip into the shadows only to fail, and he could tell that the doppelganger was getting weaker. Weak enough that he could finish it off and end it here and now. The first hit from the spear must have done a number on it if one hit could make it like this. Elijah just needs to get close enough, and another hit should kill it. 

He had a plan in mind, and while risky, it was one the doppelganger would not expect. No more attacks from behind, this time. Elijah had a different plan, and in a second, he turned invisible.

The next time he appeared, he would be in front of Elena and he plunge the spear directly into the doppelganger's body. He became visible as he did, hoping that this time he would hit and end this fight before more loss of life. It was time to see if Elijah's gamble was the right one this time.
