The premise is that, at least in the main land of this story, there is a royal bloodline that has ruled for thousands of years. However, the last king to die supposedly left no heirs to the throne - so one of the nobles have been appointed as lord and steward of the throne until the bloodline can be found once more. No one really thought there was anyone else that could take the throne. Until one day, the lord tasks the knight commanders (your characters) to find a particular adventurer that tends to be alone a lot of the time, claiming that they are a bastard child of the king, but still carry his blood. There is some lore sorted in my head, but be gentle, since this is mostly a spontaneous idea: • There is magic, often practiced by wizards. Much like you'd expect, it involves chanting an ancient language and drawing symbols in the air to cast a spell. • The royal bloodline is an exception to this. They are born with the royal rune upon their right hand that allows them to cast spells without drawing nor the language. Even moreso, in the past, the crown would grant similar runes to their knight commanders, making them a force to be reckoned with. • Not just anyone can be given a rune and in fact it's a very small portion of the population that can. No one knows the reason for this. • Knight commanders are normally chosen not only for the ability to have a rune, but for their martial expertise and wisdom on the battlefield. They are literally the highest ranked knight and serve as advisors to the crown, putting them above even nobles. - - - - - - - - - - So, please, if anyone is interested - let me know! By the time someone attains the rank of Knight Commander, they’ve proven not only their martial prowess but also their ability to bear a “Lesser Rune.” [b][u]Can I play something else?[/u][/b] While the main focus is on Knight Commanders, you could discuss with me if you’d like to play a different role (e.g., a noble, a court wizard, etc.). However, the default assumption is that your character will be a Knight Commander sent to locate the rumored heir. [u][b]The tags include “romance” and “18+.” Why is that?[/b][/u] Romance: Romance is optional, not a requirement. It’s simply an avenue you can explore if you and the other players are comfortable with it. [b][u]18+[/u][/b] This age rating is primarily about allowing creative freedom and comfort. It doesn’t mean the game is explicitly adult-themed; rather, it frees everyone from constantly worrying whether a scene or topic might be inappropriate for minors. This includes the possibility of darker themes, more graphic violence, and the occasional mature situation. Ultimately, the main plot revolves around the question of who sits on the throne and the power that comes with the Royal Rune. There are also legends of more nightmarish creatures linked to the goddess of the dark, though these remain unverified myths in most people’s eyes. Wizards can enchant objects (e.g., self-lighting candles) for those who can afford them. This kingdom does not have widespread steampunk or gunpowder technology. Some distant lands might experiment with magitech (like steam-powered inventions, but fueled by magic), though it’s rare. Overall, it’s a classic medieval fantasy setting where magic supplements technology rather than replacing it entirely. Think along the lines of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: rolling hills, scattered ancient structures, and a temperate climate suitable for farmland and trade. [u][b]Why are the nobles cooperating to find the lost heir instead of seizing power themselves?[/b][/u] [b]Divine Legitimacy:[/b] The Royal Rune is believed to be bestowed by the god of light, and nobles fear divine punishment or backlash from the populace if they claim the throne without that blessing. [b]Public Perception:[/b] The people’s acceptance of a ruler is strongly tied to the presence of the Royal Rune, making it hard to seize power without risking rebellion. [b]Opportunity for Favor:[/b] Many nobles see it as a chance to earn goodwill, influence, and rewards from the rightful heir if they help locate and restore them to power. [b]Stewardship Tradition:[/b] Historically, a steward is chosen from among the closest relatives when the rightful ruler is missing or undiscovered.
