Ah, right, sorry. In the other "layer" of the forest, along the edge, you'll find mostly thin-trunked trees, things like birch and the like. The further in you go though, the thicker and bigger trees start showing up, like maple and oak and so forth. The only thing that's a real 'rule' is that you need to go deeper into the forest to find things like nuts, berries and fruit trees. Other than that, you can pretty much see whichever trees you want as long as they fit these criteria.
EDIT:
As for things like dry wood; You'll probably be able to find dry branches on the ground pretty much anywhere. There may be some dead trees or fallen logs too, though they'd be far less common at the edge or "outer layer" of the forest. As for our resident treasure hunter...

More broken furniture.
More rotted furniture.
Hidden beneath some floorboards in one particular house, there's a strange, solid stone chest, with strange carvings or markings all across it's lid. It has a lock, but it's unlocked, though also empty. It's roughly the size of your typical trunk or box for storing clothes or larger items in. However, hoisting it out of its crevice alone would require MacKinzie to have some serious muscle in her arms. It's made out of solid stone after all. Also, the chances of her finding the floorboards and removing them to reveal this item are low, unless she accidentally walks over and has her foot go through them, or something. Very rare loot.
She may find a cast iron pot, the kind used for big cooking. Wooden ladle included inside.
She may find a (mostly) intact slim painted vase - no flowers in it though.
She may find a dirty-and-grime-covered carpet.

These are however just potential loot, and I'd be surprised if she found all of it unless she spent a significant amount of time very carefully scouring each building. If ya find the carpet though, the color and/or pattern on it is completely up to you to decide~ Same with the vase. The chest is stone-colored, aka, grey.
