That's right. Your character hasn't necessarily practiced witchcraft before, it was just a nod towards his/her potential.

I think you're picking up on the right vibes. This game isn't related to Call of Cthulu or Lovecraft, but those are definitely good examples of other occult horror media from around this time period.
