Setting the story sometime during the 100 years where Aang was frozen, not even necessarily an AU just before Aang woke up, seems like something with a lot of potential. It could be something just after the Air genocide, early in the war where everyone is blindsided by the Fire Nation invading at scale for the first time, or something closer to the time Aang wakes up when people have grown up knowing nothing but a war with no end in sight.

Or possibly something set after the war but before Korra's time, since it might allow people a bit more freedom with what characters they make (i.e. non-evil Fire benders). Something that takes place [i]after[/i] a war no one thought was going to end, at least not so suddenly, at a time when things are starting to change drastically; nations reaching out to each other more, the Avatar returning, the beginnings of an industrial revolution and I think the comics talked about more and more spirits abandoning the human world?

Both seem like they would be interesting, depending on what kind of story you want to tell.
