Ugh, pets getting sick or injured is the worst. More so when there are people around who're [i]supposed[/i] to take care of them. :/

As for the rice, no. Neither fo the girls did any sort of treatment or refinement of the grain - probably because they didn't have access to a thresher or any other sort of tool for it.
