Well, actually, the creature I was originally planning to use would have been an ancient (which I will have up and explained in the OP in just a few moments what is so I might as well say it now; the deities are ancients) with the ability to shift its shape however it willed. Whenever this ancient shifted shape, it would esentially become the creature it transformed into, with powers and all, as well as still have its own powers. The way he would get new shapes was by eating a creature of that race.
So if he found a rare plant creature that he had never seen before, he would obviously eat it.
