He was trained by a squad of commandos before rhey became KIA. So he knows how the commandos work :3 

Plus Commando squads are still outranked by padawans and usually look to them for some sort of leadership if they don't have any evidence that the padawan is an idiot (reference to the Star Wars: Republic Commando book series.)
