Thought Katanas were like the longswords in japan (more of what I'm going for) and the dai-katana was complete 2 handed...??

In any case either way is fine... I don't use shields nor do I care much for them. Same goes to double weapons. 

Even so would it help if I make a back sheath for my katana then? would this help at all?
