Gotcha, expect my edit shortly. Though I was under the assumption magic was still a kind of secret and that civilians aware of magic users might be killed, hence the Hawkins family murder. John's dad discovered magic when he was sent to kill someone who turned out to be an outlaw, not because of John himself. John was going to be taken because he would be more useful alive than dead, especially if pre-trained. Ah well, i'm not gonna quibble, let the editing commence!
