I have indeed done this before. I'm pretty sure they call it tabletop role playing where I come from. Or at least I make the efforts to develop an accent and actually voice act and... everyone else just kind of talks. 

Point is that I would actually love doing something like this. True, it could restrict the characters I play, but probably not too much if I train my voice properly. Sounds like a fun challenge...
