John strikes me as an exploratory, adventurous, manly-man kind of name. Thus, I had to apply it to a bookish, ultimately unremarkable character. Also, my original idea of "Sam Mahone" seemed a bit too obvious a Cheers reference.

Maybe he can go by Jack, to be less confusing.
