Have some sort of plot idea, or a bigger picture or a goal for it. [/quote] Actually, my RP is doing relatively well with no 'planned' plot line. (Well, it's being planned now. I have a little committee of people in on the whole Heaven VS Hell thing we've got going now.) I think it's better to leave it open ended. Though, I did go in knowing who my own characters villain would be and that there would be an enemy of the school, but as I said, I'll help with that. Also, it's good to let the other RPs have a chance at affecting the plot line. Let their characters have villains and go through struggles and such. It makes the RP so much better.
