Anything over a 1000 ships is unrealistic considering the sector was only settled recently. Industry is still building, and at the moment production on things is still pretty close, so anyone could overtake anyone. Also every planet is bound to have a degree of tourism, each planet has its own unique flora and fauna, which tourists tend to eat up new creatures.
