A week before her abduction Jessica was fighting with some local boys because they insulted a fellow classmate who was being psychologically abused by his mother. She broke one of their arms another she pushed down a hill towards which was where Halsey was waiting and watching. Halsey was looking at several of the boys for conscription, ultimately settling on the tomboy.

A few days before her abduction Roosevelt or Rosey as his mother referred to him was hiding from his mother at the junk yard. He had set up a bunch of cans all over the place that surrounded a clearing. He took a sling shot and proceeded to shoot them down.

On Reach Jessica saw nothing but competition to prove herself better than and to beat the crap out of. Roosevelt saw salvation from the abuse of his mother. They both noticed each other eventually. They didn't say anything to each other and quickly looked away.
