While this is essentialy true for many types of spiders, especially widow spiders, it is not a hard and fast rule for the order aranae (spiders). Males of most species survive a few matings, limited mainly by their short life spans.  

And the main theories behind the famous occurence of female cannibalism of the male after mating are 1) that the brains of spiders outside of the Portia species and those few which have shown tendencies toward social clanning lack the complexity required to differentiate friend from foe in many circumstnces. & 2) that the animals instinctually know that the female will require more sustenance in order to give birth.
