I wanted to see if it actually added anything to the lore/storyline but it's just not the same or as good as the two KOTORs
I'm actually a pretty big fan of the SW MMO but I will completely grant that it does nothing good at all for the extended KOTOR meta story. In point of fact it absolutely
violates it, coming off as bad fanfic in its best moments and an absolute disgrace in its worst (such as the Shadows of Revan expansion pack). They also distill KOTOR II down into being basically non-canon, which I'm pretty sure is a federal crime.
But to me the value lies in realizing that 90% of the MMO's story is set hundreds of years later and is for all intents and purposes unrelated to the KOTOR games. Many of the class storylines are just plain fun -- the Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor being my personal favorites -- if not particularly complex or deep, and the Force abilities are a lot of fun to see in action. The music is great, the atmosphere felt spot-on, some of the lore is intriguing, and I really enjoyed the idea of an Empire / Republic cold war.
The new expansion stuff seems like they're trying to turn back towards writing a proper RPG and so far it's doing a fairly good job. And they got Jeremy Irons on board somehow, which is neat. But I have to admit I find myself quickly losing interest -- the characters are really not very interesting ultimately, and the villains are cardboard cut-outs (with the exception of a dude named Valkorion). I'm also firmly in the camp of wanting an actual KOTOR III.
Plus, the MMO could use some serious gameplay and graphical polishing; I've been playing a fair bit of FFXIV which blows Old Republic out of the water. Haha.
